LIVING in romania
European Union citizens who enter Romania have the right to reside in the country for up to 3 months. EU citizens who wish to stay for a longer period of time must register with the Authority for Aliens. Permanent residence can be granted after 5 years of legal residence in Romania. Housing in RomaniaThe best way to check the housing market in Romania is to check the dedicated housing sections in newspapers. Whether you want to rent or buy, that will give you an idea as to what the prices are in different areas. You can also ask an estate agent. The easiest way to find one is through Yellow Pages (www.yellowpages.ro). Bear in mind, however, when buying or renting a flat, that the estate agent will charge a commission from both the buyer (tenant) and the seller (landlord). A lot of estate agents now offer flats and houses through their websites. Houses are quite expensive in big cities, especially Bucharest, more so in central areas. Bills for utilities (such as gas and electricity) must be paid on time (normally every month) otherwise utilities can be cut off. If you have a Romanian bank account, some banks allow you to pay by direct debit or internet transfer, however you should check which ones provide the service. Banking, mortgages, loans in RomaniaBanks are usually open between 9 am and 6 pm. Some branches also open on Saturdays. Opening a bank account is not a complicated procedure, however banks tend to charge a commission on most services, such as withdrawing cash from an ATM or the bank, issuing a new card, etc. The mortgage market is developing very quickly, with some banks offering loans with no deposit and allowing repayments to be of up to 70% of your monthly income. Social and cultural life in RomaniaMost big cities have a buzzing social and cultural life, with big events such as the George Enescu Festival in Bucharest or the Medieval Festival in the historic city of Sighisoara, theatres, concerts, etc. The nightlife, especially in Bucharest, is not only for the weekends and a lot of places stay open until the early hours of the morning, even during the week. |
