bucharestBucharest is the capital of Romania, located in the south-east of the country. It is the centre of Romanian media, culture, arts and is now quickly turning into one of the busiest and vibrant European capitals.
Bucharest's existence was first mentioned in the 15th century. It used to be known as "Little Paris" in the period between the two World Wars thanks to its elegant French-influenced architecture; part of it can still be seen, especially in the centre of Bucharest. The city is now a mix of historical, Communist and modern architecture.
Bucharest has a population of about 2 million and is the most prosperous city in Romania. It's divided in six sectors, each with its own administrative structure, disposed so that each manages an area of the city centre. The city governing body is headed by a General Mayor, while the sectors are managed by other six mayors and, in certain areas, the powers are shared between the sectors authorities and the main governing body of Bucharest. Bucharest famous landmarksBucharest has a number of landmarks, both old and new. One of the relatively new ones is the Palace of Parliament, world famous as one of the former Communist dictator Nicolae Ceausescu's ambitious creations. It's the largest building in Europe and the second largest in the world. The Palace of Parliament now houses the Chambers of Deputies and the Senate and also the Museum of Contemporary Art. The historical centre of Bucharest is still a bohemian and beautiful area, despite the degradation. It is now undergoing significant restoration. The Triumphal Arch (Arcul de Triumf) was built in 1935 and its architecture is similar to the Arc de Triomphe in Paris. The CEC Palace is one of the most beautiful palaces in Bucharest.

Cotroceni Palace was built at the end of the 19th century in one of the most beautiful areas of Bucharest. Over the years, Cotroceni Palace was one of the residences of the Romanian royal family and nowadays is the residence of the President of Romania. The Cotroceni district remains one of the exclusive areas of Bucharest, with stunning houses. Other landmarks in the area are the Botanical Garden, the Medicine University, the Law University and the National Opera.
